Foundation Receives Generous Donation from Patient Couple

Foundation Receives Generous Donation from Patient Couple
Burt and Elaine Margulis, long-time supporters and grateful patients, recently contributed a generous "blended" gift to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital. Their gift combines a major gift with a bequest designated for Henry Mayo, included in their estate plan.

Since moving to Santa Clarita, the couple has been active in the community in the hospital's auxiliary groups as volunteers. Elaine has knitted hats and booties for babies in the Maternity Department. Burt has also served on the Foundation's advisory board. And as patients at Henry Mayo, Burt and Elaine have experienced first-hand the world-class healthcare available to the SCV community.

"Burt and Elaine have been dear friends and dedicated supporters of the hospital for many years, " said Diana Vose, president of Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital Foundation. We are grateful for a gift that truly represents the very special relationship they have with Henry Mayo."

Blended gifts, which can combine a major gift with a planned gift, often help meet donors' current and future charitable goals. The Margulis' wish to see their gift make a difference for patients and families.

"Both Burt and I were patients at Henry Mayo," – said Elaine Margulis. "Staff knows their jobs and are very friendly. "Burt had a pacemaker inserted at the hospital, and I had surgery on both of my knees. We love Henry Mayo, and are happy to see that our gift will help patients right away."

Burt and Elaine also wish their gift to continue in perpetuity. To achieve this goal, they included Henry Mayo in their estate plan by creating a "fractional share bequest", which apportioned a specific amount in their trust, designating it to Henry Mayo. They stipulated their wish for another area at the hospital to be named after them when their bequest matures.

Burt Margulis smiled: "We wanted to leave a legacy that, when we leave this world, patients will continue to benefit from. And, in this way, the Margulis name will be remembered as having helped, even after we are gone."

In addition to a plaque commemorating their gift to name a surgical suite, the Margulis' will be recognized in the "Legacy Circle" area on the donor wall in the hospital's main lobby. The Legacy Circle includes donors who included Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital in their estate plans.
